PROJECT SUMMARY

Oblivious-gate

In the midst of our presidential issues, we often hear the term “Watergate” voiced by political pundits. A term born over 40 years ago still permeates into the public conversation, often as a punchline. But I often wondered if those of the rising generation understand the meaning behind Watergate. Honestly, I wasn’t even confident in my understanding of Nixon era.
The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library & Museum provides an accounting of those events that transpired, as well as how President Ford handled the Presidency in such a significant transition. I wanted to refresh their digital presentation of the Watergate Files to inspire excitement for visitors, especially students or educators planning a classroom visit to the Museum. With ample historic documentation, the Watergate Files have an opportunity to motivate and engage users to learn and understand through the use of gamification.

Welcome to an interactive investigation of the core events of the Watergate scandal.

Welcome to an interactive investigation of the core events of the Watergate scandal.

THE WATERGATE FILES

The break-in

Participants begin their investigation at the dashboard, which presents four different time periods of the scandal. As they examine the content of the Watergate Files, users will see photos and news clippings added to the board.

THE WATERGATE FILES

Follow the money

Each Watergate File contains bios, photos, and documents for their specific time period. But hidden within each file are facts that unlock additional sections of the dashboard. These facts are found when hovered or clicked. Users then click or touch to highlight the area and collect the clue.

THE WATERGATE FILES

See the pattern

As visitors complete their investigation, they can see how the photos and clippings come together through a beautiful line animation. Users will then have access to special interviews and content regarding Nixon’s resignation.

PROJECT DETAILS

Goal-driven discovery

Establishing a mission system for discovering facts to bring down President Nixon gives users a purpose for activity. I’ve been doing some research about onboarding systems using instructional design, and I wanted to ensure that each step of the process was engaging to promote recall and comprehension—from the animation and colors, to the organization of content on the page.
While updating the design of the educational content, I wanted to ensure that the interactive game could be accessed on mobile devices. This was indeed a design challenge, as the desktop version allowed for the artistic folder tab navigation. I was able to engineer the same effect for mobile screens, but ran out of space for the dashboard. But after some thought and sketches, I was able to implement an interesting design feature in which the dashboard would be revealed in landscape mode. I was pleased with how that turned out.

RESULTS

Understanding Watergate

By reliving the Watergate investigation step by step through the museum’s website, participants can learn and grow from the experience. Even during this research and design process, I learned a lot. Through Nixon’s follies and failures, I gained a deeper appreciation for President Gerald Ford and a confidence that America will always push forward from tragedy.
